From Rachel Hampton: We made $918 toward the scholarship fund from the silent auction for next year’s annual sessions! And we came out ahead on expenses for the conference as well.

Ye Olde Fair Trader (aka Lorie Wood) forged a connection with Canaan Fair Trade and began selling products from small scale farmers in 2008. Although Lorie is completely recovered today, the following short essay from Lorie's husband, Wilbur, reflects on Lorie’s serious illness in 2010 and what it means to be faithful.

I am at my wife Lorie’s bedside in a hospital in Nazareth. This is not what we planned for this trip. She volunteers with Canaan Fair Trade distributing olive oil and other products. It is olive harvest time and we have come to the harvest festival.

This has been a ministry for Lorie. The sale of Palestinian farmers’ products lifts up the poor of the land. Selling products from the West Bank is a peaceful protest against 43 years of oppressive occupation. Olive oil soap and couscous sales support women’s cooperatives, providing financial security for them.

But now Lorie is ill. She has missed out on the celebration and the opportunity to connect with producers of what she sells. By the nature of her illness she may not be able to return to her ministry of selling Palestinian products.

This is a great disappointment. We must remember that Jesus did not call us to be successful, but to be faithful. Times come when we must leave behind a work that has been an expression of our faith, even though that work is not finished.

What continues is our faithfulness to labor at our tasks in God’s ministry of reconciliation. When one task is let go, there are others suitable to our gifts at any point in our lives. Whatever our situation, we are God’s agents working for justice, seeking peace, and witnessing to the love of God we know in Jesus Christ.
