Jazmin Miller

Jazmin Miller (she/her/hers) is an oncology chaplain with Providence and is a member at Camas Friends Church. A lifelong Oregonian, she likes walking in both the sunshine and the rain. She especially likes it when both happen at once. 

She felt drawn to chaplaincy during the journey of grieving a loss in her own family. When she learned that it was a real job to go and be with people in the middle of the crisis, loss, or transition, she realized at once it was the job she wanted to do—and it was the sort of person she wanted to be. While working on her Master of Divinity, she completed a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at a level-one trauma hospital in Portland. This confirmed this call to be a “particular person for others.” 

During her CPE she also learned more about Quaker spirituality, which was already part of her family story. Quaker testimonies and practices resonated with her immediately, and she connected with a family member who is a Quaker minister. That family member brought her to Camas Friends, which soon felt like home. Finding a home among Friends has been especially meaningful for her work as a chaplain. She finds the openness and expansiveness of Quaker spirituality and the honoring of “that of God in everyone” to be a meaningful stance for working in an interfaith environment. 

After growing up in evangelical Christianity, she finds it deeply significant to now be fully accepted and encouraged as a minister with pastoral authority—without reservation because of her gender— and to be able to offer that same openness and acceptance to others. 

She lives in Portland, Oregon with her partner Justin and two beloved cats, Pepper and Cheese.
